Intermediate Groupwork Skills

Four Day Workshop

Those applying for this course should have completed GCT's Foundation Training or equivalent (subject to agreement with the Director of Training.)

The workshop is designed to continue to examine group processes and theory so as to enable and develop a further awareness of group dynamics.

Participants are offered the opportunity to continue to improve upon, or learn new skills in a variety of techniques including :-

 Working more creatively in groups. Taking care of self and developing practice. Co-working, leadership styles and roles.Groupwork consultancy and supervision.Introduction to GCT’s Process Training Model (PTM).

The facilitators will be responsible for providing structure, theoretical input, boundaries and safety. There is emphasis on peer learning. Participants are encouraged to bring their own material for exploration and help.

You will be will be asked to :

Look at a wide range of group work issues and decide some of the course content.

Facilitate aspects of the course in pairs. A key part of this training is the regular review and analysis of the processes operating within this group, so enabling a higher awareness of the dynamics which fuel all group interactions.

Participants who attend all four days are awarded a Certificate of Achievement and are eligible for a place on the Groupwork Certificate Course.

Standard Guide

NVQ’s National Vocational Qualifications are a very significant part of the UK training and development. They were first introduced in 1986 by the specially formed National Council for Vocational Qualifications.

NVQ awards are often at a high level of competence. Course could add further knowledge towards gaining a NVQ level 3. For example within the Health & Social Care NVQ3 awards, there are two optional group work units for Children & Young People HSC 322 and HSC 393.

Course could also provide significant learning for NVQ level 4.

DANOS, the Drug & Alcohol National Occupational Standards specify the standards of performance that staff in the drug and alcohol field should be working towards.

Course could be linked to DANOS standards:-AD.2.1; AD3.1; AD2.2; AD3.2; A13.1; A13,2; A13.3.


The four days are part of a twelve day group work course and count as 72 units of 216 units towards the Certificate of Groupwork
