Motivational Interviewing

Two Day Workshop

How do you motivate someone to change a pattern of destructive or anti social behaviour? How do you help someone who has been abusing drugs or alcohol change? How do you motivate someone to keep appointments and participate in programmes when they have lived a chaotic life?

“Motivational interviewing is an effective, evidence based approach to overcoming the ambivalence which keep people from making the desired changes in their lives” (Miller And Rollnick). Motivational interviewing is a counselling technique which avoids confrontational methods. The use of open and Socratic questions are the techniques central to gaining proficiency in this field. Other methods include the use of summarising, reflective listening and rolling with resistance. These skills are used selectively to encourage the clients to explore their ambivalence and consider change.

This package combines theoretical input, experiential exercises and relevant practise using role play. The workshop promotes the idea that everyone can improve their motivational style. Some will leave with useful tools, while others will leave with a whole change of perspective and way of communicating.

At the end of the two days participants will be able to

Explain the key principles of motivational interviewing. Outline and practise key motivational strategies and skills Have a greater understanding of their own and others processes of change and resistance, and relate this to the theory.
